Summary
The now abandoned Jurassic World Theme Island's existence, and all the dinosaurs on it, is threatened by a volcanic eruption so do-gooders, Claire Dearing and Owen Grady are off to save the animals from a second extinction event. I wonder if some dishonest businessmen will double cross them at some point?
My Thoughts on the Film
I was actually disappointed in this movie. It isn't like I expected much from "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (JW:FK)" but I did expect it to be bigger and more dinosaur-ier than the first one and it just wasn't.
At first glance, the trailer would make you think that this could be a schlocky fun mash up of the dinosaur/monster genre and the natural disaster genre, but what you end up getting is a coupe of destruction sequences followed by the majority of the film taking place in a huge underground laboratory where evil business people are custom creating dinosaurs for sale to anyone with millions to burn.
If you thought Chris Pratt's (“Avengers: Infinity War”) and Bryce Dallas Howard's (“The Help”) hilarious back and forth from the first film was delightful and fun, brace yourself for none of that in this one. If you enjoyed the chaotic insanity of mayhem driven dinos feasting on masses of tourists was a blast, get ready for none of that in this one.
The bottom line is, this film is less than the one before it. What I found most interesting about this film is...
The Next Jurassic World Film
(SPOILERS)
At the end of JW:FK the dinosaurs all get lose on the mainland. We see the giant water dinosaur is loose in the oceans and Blue, the raptor that Chris Pratt raised, is perched on a hill overlooking a vast suburb.
This got me thinking, 'what kind of film are they setting up, here?'
Now, I know that in all likelihood, what we will get is a film where the dinosaurs attack the human cities somehow drive us into a post apocalyptic blah blah blah a' la "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" or "Day After Tomorrow," but I am choosing to hope for the movie I am imagining.
I am hoping for a "Mad Max" style sequel. I don't need to see the world fall. That's boring. Show me the new world. Show me trained dinosaurs being ridden by raider bands around Latin America. Show me rated R violence that reflects a world where dinosaurs actually exist. It still blows me away that there are 5 popular films about dinosaurs disemboweling and eating people alive and they are made so tame that they have a PG13 rating.
I guarantee that movie would do business. Instead of looking at the previous film and asking how you can do something similar (almost the exact same plot as Lost World), try taking what people thought was fun about “Jurassic World,” Huge Dino v Human sequences, Chris Pratt as Raptor Whispering Pack Leader, and Huge Dino on Dino Fights and push it to the limit. Stop giving it even a cursory nod to reality.
Invest in some craziness and maybe you'll get crazy box office returns. Keep it tame and it looks like you get tame returns.
